For a long time the excellent, highly competent statewide organization Health Care for All — Washington (www.healthcareforallwa.org) has been working for Universal Single-Payer health care.  Their quarterly newsletter is an excellent source of information, so I urge everyone to sign up to receive it in the mail.  I also urge people to donate so they can continue publishing, organizing, and lobbying at the State Legislature. How could we move our whole society higher on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?

In 1943 psychologist Abraham Maslow wrote that people have five categories of needs.  Our most basic needs are for our physiological (air, food, etc.), and the next higher category is for our safety (personal security, employment, etc.).  The next step up in the hierarchy is our need for love and belonging (friendship, connections, intimacy, etc.).  Above that is our need for esteem (respect, positive self-image, freedom, etc.), and the highest level of need in Maslow’s hierarchy is the need for self-actualization (becoming the very best person you can be). Olympia’s people want to CUT the Pentagon budget and INCREASE funding to serve human and environmental needs!

Twice in late summer 2019 the Olympia Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons organized and staffed information tables at public events. Six jars were labeled with different possible uses for our federal budget. We handed each visitor a stack of ten pennies and invited them to put the pennies into the various jars to show how the visitor would choose to spend the federal budget.
