Momentum is growing to push pension funds, etc., to DIVEST from fossil fuels

March 5, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

I am seeing MANY non-profit organizations urging state governments’ pension funds and other entities (colleges, religious bodies, investment companies, etc.) to DIVEST from — SELL ALL of — their investments in fossil fuel companies. MOMENTUM IS ON OUR SIDE! Let’s increase the number of persons learning about the movement!  Let’s recruit some additional persons to testify to an upcoming meeting of the Washington State Investment Board (WSIB), the small state agencies that manages the pension funds for state and local government employees and retirees.  We have been testifying to WSIB’s meetings off and on since April 2014.  They listen politely […]

Insights into the 2020 presidential election

March 5, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

Since the 1970s political and economic decisions have been hurting ordinary people’s economics and transferring their incomes and wealth to big businesses and extremely rich people. Ordinary people – voters – are angry about what they have been suffering. Many of President Bill Clinton’s policies had already showed his utter subservience to those economic elites, and Hillary was cashing in and perpetuating that cozy subservience by raking in millions of dollars for speaking to groups of elite bankers and Wall Street wheeler-dealers. Both Bill and Hillary did many things that hurt ordinary people and the labor movement. In 2016 many […]

On Fri. Feb. 7, 2020, the WA State Senate committee PASSED SJM 8006 to urge Congress to reduce likelihood of nuclear war!

February 7, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

Today I joined a good number of members of the Olympia Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons and our statewide coalition Washington Against Nuclear Weapons (www.wanwcoalition.org) attended the WA State Senate hearing on SJM 8006, and some of us (including me) testified in support. The committee PASSED the resolution, so it goes to Senate Rules Committee, which we hope will move it to the Senate Floor for final passage. Then it would go the relevant House committee for further action. Each of us had only 90 seconds to testify to the committee about SJM 8006.  Here is basically what I told […]

Presidential candidates AND members of Congress MUST take the climate crisis seriously!

February 7, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

Elected officials and candidates like to create the image that they care about important issues (such as the climate crisis), but many of them are NOT SINCERE and are “slippery” and have conflicts of interest.  Voters and the media MUST HOLD THEM ACCOUNTABLE.     A great many of the persons Trump has appointed to positions of enormous power over the environment, energy, etc., have very severe conflicts of interest.  I will post a different item to my blog with examples of those horrible corruptions of our government.     Members of Congress own up to $93 MILLION in fossil […]

Why the Pentagon Never Wins Wars Anymore But Needs Bigger and Bigger Nearly Trillion-Dollar Budgets

January 26, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

Read Juan Cole’s article in the January 22, 2020, post at Tomdispatch:  https://www.juancole.com/2020/01/pentagon-trillion-budgets.html I have written about this topic before.  For example, see the explicit, informative handout I provided to participants in a workshop I presented to the public in September 2016:  De-Militarize U.S. Foreign Policy — WORKSHOP handout for participants and others I can provide much additional information about the entrenched economic and political powers of the Military-Industrial Complex and the need to CONVERT FROM A PERMANENT WAR ECONOMY TO A PEACE ECONOMY.  I conducted a huge amount of research in 1976-1977 about how military spending actually HURTS THE […]

A new report highlights 2019’s new trends in criminal justice policies

January 26, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

The Sentencing Project is a TRULY EXCELLENT non-profit organization that monitors and analyzes information about criminal justice sentencing — and pushes effectively for progressive reforms.  I donate financial support to them and receive regular news from them.  I hope you will connect too.  See www.sentencingproject.org In 2019 they — and formerly incarcerated activists, lawmakers, and advocates — worked to challenge mass incarceration. They made good progress in 2019, as they have in recent years.  See their new 4-page report, “Top Trends in State Criminal Justice Reform.” https://www.sentencingproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Top-Trends-in-State-Criminal-Justice-Reform-2019.pdf?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=8251ac2a-bedb-41ec-a088-cc1e529d01e8 It highlights key changes in criminal justice policy achieved in 2019, including these examples: […]

Extremist right-wing militias promote a gun-oriented “civil war” nationwide

January 26, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

See this article from January 2020:  https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2020/1/19/1912573/-Beyond-Monday-s-gun-laden-march-in-Richmond-militias-plans-for-a-civil-war-look-to-go-national?detail=emaildkre   In October 2019 an article said incivility is pushing the U.S. toward “edge of civil war.”  See this article:  https://thefulcrum.us/big-picture/new-civil-war   In October 2019 a prominent right-wing extremist stated, “There Is Going to Be Violence in America” if Trump is removed from office.  Rick Wiles is a hate-monger and anti-Semite who strongly supports Trump — and Trump strongly supports him (even to the point of granting him press credentials for covering the White House, as if Rick Wiles were a legitimate journalist).  See this two-minute video:    https://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/rick-wiles-there-is-going-to-be-violence-in-america-if-trump-is-removed-from-office/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=rww&utm_campaign=bestof   In August 2019 […]

SIGN PETITION about Congress members who own stocks in weapons manufacturing vote about war decisions

January 26, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

How corrupt is this? Many members of Congress – those people who make decisions about wars – own stocks in businesses that make military weapons. I signed this petition and hope you will too. The excellent non-profit organization Project on Government Oversight (POGO), www.pogo.org) monitors government corruption.  They sent this e-mail in mid-January 2020: The American people have spent a lot of time talking about our wars with Iraq and Afghanistan—and rightly so. They’ve cost so many lives and trillions of taxpayer dollars. But what would you say if we told you that members of Congress actually stand to profit […]

How could we move our whole society higher on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?

January 26, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

In 1943 psychologist Abraham Maslow wrote that people have five categories of needs.  Our most basic needs are for our physiological (air, food, etc.), and the next higher category is for our safety (personal security, employment, etc.).  The next step up in the hierarchy is our need for love and belonging (friendship, connections, intimacy, etc.).  Above that is our need for esteem (respect, positive self-image, freedom, etc.), and the highest level of need in Maslow’s hierarchy is the need for self-actualization (becoming the very best person you can be). His theory states that only when a person has sufficiently satisfied […]
