Why the U.S. House must push for VERY BOLD changes, not merely bi-partisan deals

January 25, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

Moderates want House Democrats to settle for bi-partisan deals with the Republican-dominated Senate. If the House Democrats do that, they will be rebuffing the voters who gave them a mandate for VERY BOLD changes. They also will FAIL TO IDENTIFY how progressive Democrats are much better than conservative Republicans. Even if the Senate fails to pass VERY BOLD House legislation, the points will be made, and 2020’s voters will see who is really on their side, vs. who is on the side of the oppressors. https://www.thenation.com/article/democrats-congress-fundamental-reforms/?link_id=7&can_id=1d662460c0abb8939c5044c82927552b&source=email-pledge-update-for-bold-reforms-naacp-protest-yemen-vote-populism-wins-roma&email_referrer=email_468235&email_subject=pledge-update-for-bold-reforms-naacp-protest-yemen-vote-populism-wins-roma

Read George Lakey’s books and articles about nonviolence and grassroots organizing

January 25, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

Recently I heard George Lakey speak in Olympia, and I bought his latest book.  I’ve known George for decades, heard him speak many times, and took a weekend of nonviolence training from him several decades ago.  He is one of the whole world’s most highly respected organizers and writers about very savvy grassroots organizing. I encourage you to read the articles George Lakey writes about nonviolent grassroots organizing, strategizing, movement-building, social justice, and more.  He writes articles for www.wagingnonviolence.org, which posts many other people’s articles, too. You can subscribe at that link and have new articles sent to you. You […]

Our systems are not “broken.” They’re working as intended. They are DELIBERATELY UNFAIR.

January 3, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

People keep saying that our nation’s systems are “broken.”  That is misleading.  They are NOT “broken.”  They are WORKING AS INTENDED!  They are DELIBERATELY UNFAIR! On issue after issue, politicians, mainstream media, and the general public keep saying that our systems are “broken.”  But if you look at how they are actually functioning — WHAT THEY ACTUALLY DO — and WHAT THEY ARE PREVENTING — and WHO HAS THE POWER and WHO BENEFITS from the status quo — you’ll see that these systems are NOT really “broken.”  They are serving the rich and the powerful and preventing the changes that […]

16-year-old girl gets 51 years in prison for self-defense against attempted rapist/murderer

December 17, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Cyntoia Brown, a 16-year-old girl, was afraid that a man who was going to rape her was also going to kill her, so she killed him in self-defense.  See this information: https://www.freedomunited.org/news/calls-for-clemency-as-cyntoia-brown-given-51-years-in-jail/?trk_msg=G3JDM722QIFK56BHJIIIH18Q50&trk_contact=K0U2405KL0NSNF0DMJQ6KVTNEC&trk_sid=7H71ASV2V8BDKPMJ28IG9A6O90&utm_source=Listrak&utm_medium=email&utm_term=Calls+for+Clemency+as+Cyntoia+Brown+Given+51+Years+in+Jail&utm_campaign=News+Digest&utm_content=News+Digest_12162018 MORE INFORMATION from a non-profit organization urging Tennessee’s government to grant clemency:: Cyntoia Brown is a girl who our justice system failed. California is still planning to execute an innocent man.

December 16, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Kevin Cooper, who is almost certainly innocent, has been imprisoned on California’s death row for 33 years. His cell is smaller than a typical American bathroom. The State of California refuses to conduct modern DNA testing. A federal judge on the 9th Circuit says Mr. Cooper is innocent, and that “the San Bernardino sheriff’s department framed him.” The evidence does not point to him at all. The same federal appeals judge also said, ““the state failed to provide Cooper a fair hearing,” that “the state obstructed and impeded Cooper and his lawyers in almost every way imaginable in denying his […]

A psychiatrist thinks we should treat alt-right bigotry like a disease.

December 16, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

This psychiatrist thinks we should treat alt-right bigotry like a disease. There could be a public health solution. He says alt-right bigotry is not technically a discrete medical disease, but that “there are good reasons to treat bigotry as a public health problem.” He says, “some of the approaches we take toward controlling the spread of disease may be applicable to pathological bigotry: for example, by promoting self-awareness of bigotry and its adverse health consequences.” “[W]hat if, in an important sense, bigotry is both virulent and contagious – that is, capable of both causing damage and spreading from person to […]

PART 2 of “Choose a Better Worldview to Build a Better World”

November 30, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Our nation and world are in a horrible mess.  The December 2018 episode of “Glen’s Parallax Perspectives” TV series examines how to solve the problems. A person or an entire society has a “worldview” — a way of seeing reality — that strongly directs their behavior and public policy.  The worldview that currently dominates the U.S. government and society has caused escalating greed, corruption, cruelty, oppression, war, and other bad things.  Instead, we need to replace that worldview with its opposite — a worldview that is humane, compassionate, peaceful, fair to everyone, and environmentally sustainable. An unjust society seeks to […]

A psychiatrist thinks we should treat alt-right bigotry like a disease.

November 25, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

The psychiatrist in the article linked at the end of this blog post thinks we should treat alt-right bigotry like a disease.  This would help us understand how to use public health methodologies for a solution to alt-right bigotry.. He says alt-right bigotry is not technically a discrete medical disease, but that “there are good reasons to treat bigotry as a public health problem.”  He says, “some of the approaches we take toward controlling the spread of disease may be applicable to pathological bigotry: for example, by promoting self-awareness of bigotry and its adverse health consequences.” “[W]hat if, in an […]

Stop Hurting Other Nations. Accept All Refugees Caused by Our Violence.

November 25, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Parents teach children to clean up their messes. We must teach our government the same lesson. The U.S. keeps attacking other nations, making it impossible for victims to live there, but the U.S. refuses to accept those refugees.  Survivors in Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, Yemen and many other nations cannot live safely in their home countries . The U.S. has a moral obligation to invite our wars’ refugees to settle here. The U.S. arms dictators and other abusive governments that abuse and kill their people.  The U.S. abuses other nations in many ways, causing those populations to flee for safety.  […]

Trump’s anti-immigrant 2020 census question is going to court

November 13, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Previously (on this blog’s “Immigration” page) I had reported that Trump wants the 2020 census to ask whether people are immigrants.  My previous posts explained why this is a horrible, racist, anti-immigrant, and anti-Democrat proposal. In early November 2018 Trump’s citizenship question on the 2020 census was going to court. Here is an article about that:  https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/census-citizenship-question-lawsuit_us_5bdccf39e4b09d43e31efd46 The ACLU is fighting Trump’s citizenship question.  See this information:  https://www.aclu.org/blog/voting-rights/fighting-voter-suppression/how-census-citizenship-question-could-affect-future?ms_aff=NAT&initms_aff=NAT&ms=181103_freespeech_newsletter_signupaudience&initms=181103_freespeech_newsletter_signupaudience&ms_chan=eml&initms_chan=eml

A blistering critique of U.S. politics! PART 1: “Choose a Better Worldview to Build a Better World”

October 30, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

You can watch the November 2018 episode of the TV program for my series “Glen’s Parallax Perspectives” through a link on this blog post — or on TCTV cable channel 22 in Thurston County. (See info below.) This is PART 1 of a 2-part topic, “Choose a Better Worldview to Build a Better World.” It focuses mostly on the problems. PART 2, the December 2018 program, will focus more on solutions. SEE THE LINK BELOW for a VERY THOROUGH, BLISTERING CRITIQUE of the worldview that has increasingly dominated U.S. politics. Parts 1 and 2 of this program explains that the […]

Outreach ideas for hard, scary issues

October 30, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

It is hard to inform and mobilize the public about hard, scary issues such as nuclear weapons, the climate crisis, and Trumpism’s escalating fascism. Typically, we throw facts at people, but people too fearful and powerless to open themselves up psychologically to hear those facts, let alone act upon them. The document I wrote and linked below  can help the public empower themselves to work on serious issues, including the hardest and most  frightening issues. In order to really engage the public on these hard and frightening issues, we must deliberately strategize how to address the public’s fears, feelings of […]

More info: WA State death penalty is ruled UNCONSTITUTIONAL

October 17, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

In some previous communications I made a typographical error in the date when the Washington State Supreme Court ruled our state’s death penalty unconstitutional.  It happened on Thursday October 11, 2018.  I don’t know how I mistakenly had typed October 6 in some things you might have seen.   Here are some additional sources of information reporting on the big news.   An excellent Quaker-based non-profit organization (Friends Committee on National Legislation — FCNL www.fcnl.org) cited a news article from National Public Radio (NPR) about Washington State’s death penalty being struck down.  See this link:  https://www.npr.org/2018/10/11/656570464/washington-state-strikes-down-death-penalty-citing-racial-bias?utm_campaign=thisweek&utm_medium=email&utm_source=ak   The national level […]

Washington State’s death penalty is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Our State Supreme Court ruled UNANIMOUSLY on Oct. 11, 2018.

October 12, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Wednesday October 10 was the World Day Against the Death Penalty.  One day later big news happened in Washington State USA. On Thursday October 11, 2018, Washington State’s Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty is unconstitutional in the way it’s used here. The Court ordered that the sentences of people currently on death row are converted to life in prison.  I learned about this State Supreme Court case (State v. Gregory) in May 2016. We were expecting a decision in November 2016 or soon after. Allen Eugene Gregory, who had been convicted of murder and sentenced to die, had […]
