Nonviolent Grassroots Organizing Creates Light and Progress

December 9, 2021 GlenAnderson 0

Nonviolent Grassroots Organizing Creates Light and Progress Glen Anderson (360) 491-9093 glenanderson@integra.net The January 2022 theme for the Olympia-based publication Works In Progress (www.olywip.org) – “Where do we find light” – is a smart question to ask.  I recommend finding light in two places:  in ourselves and in the world around us. Contrary to the cynical assumption that human beings are inherently competitive and cruel (and contrary to the religious assumption that we’re doomed by “original sin”), powerful research affirms humans inherently want to cooperate and be good to each other.  I read the book Humankind: A Hopeful History written […]

President Reagan armed and supported Saddam Hussein

December 8, 2021 GlenAnderson 0

Just like in Orwell’s novel 1984, the U.S. government and mainstream news media suppress historical facts that would embarrass the government and media. One example is the fact that during some years in the 1980s President Reagan armed and militarily supported Iraq’s Saddam Hussein — especially to help him wage Iraq’s war against Iran (1980-1988).  A million Iranians and somewhere between 250,000 and 500,000 Iraqis died in that war. When George W. Bush and Dick Cheney were issuing propaganda in order to fool the American public, media and politicians into their totally unnecessary and illegal war against Iraq (2003 and […]

Proposing a Bold New Global Peace Movement Led by Women

November 18, 2021 GlenAnderson 0

The November 2021 episode of “Glen’s Parallax Perspectives” proposes a bold, new worldwide peace movement – and it will be much more successful if women lead it. The world is stuck in violence, militarism, systemic injustices, and ecocide.  The status quo is dominated by top-down systems of war and other kinds of injustices.  Wars do not work.  Nuclear war could instantly destroy us all.  Instead of top-down dysfunction, the world needs a very bold grassroots movement grounded in profound nonviolence.  The movement can succeed, especially if women to lead it on behalf of children and all of humanity. Glen interviewed […]

We need PEACE instead of provoking war with Russia.

November 7, 2021 GlenAnderson 0

As soon as the Russian Revolution occurred in 1917, the U.S. treated that nation as an enemy.  Although the Soviet Union was an ally with the U.S. in opposing Nazi Germany, when Japan was ready to surrender in 1945, the U.S. unnecessarily dropped two atomic bombs on Japan — partly in order to intimidate the Soviet Union.  For many decades from 1945 until the USSR collapsed in 1991, the U.S. kept treating that nation as an enemy with whom we were locked in a Cold War that was ready at any moment to destroy the entire world with nuclear weapons.  […]

Prevent Congress from drafting women!

September 29, 2021 GlenAnderson 0

In the past few years I have posted to my blog’s category about Military Service, Recruitment, the Draft, etc. some news about the danger that the military draft might be expanded to include (and oppress) women equally with men.  Instead of copying those links here, you can see those posts at that category of my blog. Here is what’s new now:   On September 3, 2021, the Quaker-based lobbying organization “Friends Committee on National Legislation” (www.fcnl.org) reported this: Amendment Approved to Include Women in Draft:  The House Armed Services Committee approved an amendment requiring women to register for the draft. The U.S.’s defeat in Afghanistan reveals the ongoing decline of U.S. empire.

September 25, 2021 GlenAnderson 0

For many decades, politicians have been telling the American people that the U.S. is the strongest nation on earth — the mighty protector of peace and democracy and human rights and freedom — and that our military is the strongest and most powerful. But we keep losing wars — including our losses to poor nations such as Vietnam and Afghanistan. The U.S. Empire is a sham — a “Potemkin Village” — but despite its gross ineffectiveness, both political parties vigorously fund more military violence. When the U.S. clearly lost its 20-year war in Afghanistan, several savvy persons wrote articles such […]

Vietnam — What most people don’t know — And similarities to Afghanistan

September 25, 2021 GlenAnderson 0

When the U.S. was in the process of losing its 20-year war in Afghanistan – one of the poorest nations on earth – I kept thinking of similarities with the U.S.’s ongoing cruelty and violence and war crimes in Vietnam from the 1940s to 1975.  (Vietnam also was a very poor nation, but Vietnam’s people defeated the world’s most powerful military decades before Afghanistan did that to the U.S.) Mainstream U.S. news media have a very long record of kowtowing to U.S. foreign policy instead of reporting critical and true information.  Most schools’ history classes run behind schedule in the […]

The U.S.’s bullying of NATO is very dangerous for the whole world

September 9, 2021 GlenAnderson 0

Michael Klare’s smart article below lays out the context for the dangerous escalation of a new nuclear arms race: Dividing the World Into Opposing Camps Is the Road to Armageddon Washington aims to recast NATO in the image of the US military, with its focus on “great power competition” and a renewed arms race with Russia and China. NPR’s 14-minute program about healing U.S.’s divisions through truth and reconciliation commissions

September 9, 2021 GlenAnderson 0

I have not yet listened to this, but I want to share it with you in case you might find it interesting and useful. I support good “truth and reconciliation commissions,” such as the one that South Africa did. Some other nations have done them too superficially to be useful. Canada did good work regarding their First Nations, and they produced significant accomplishments.   https://www.npr.org/2020/10/11/922849505/healing-u-s-divides-through-truth-and-reconciliation-commissions?emci=61063094-bd0f-eb11-96f5-00155d03affc&emdi=d2d85586-7410-eb11-96f5-00155d03affc&ceid=882844

In the 1940s my Dad built a SOLAR clothes dryer. Mom operated it for decades.

September 9, 2021 GlenAnderson 0

In the 1950s when I was growing up, I remember at home we had a SOLAR and WIND clothes dryer.  It used no fossil fuels and no electricity. Dad built it in the 1940s.  Mom operated it for decades. It was called a “clothesline.”  Every home’s back yard had one.  It was an upright metal pole with a smaller horizontal metal crossbar at the top.  30 to 40 feet away was another one with the same design.  Stretched between them were four long metal wires that constituted the clothesline. People would wash clothes, sheets, towels, etc., in the house and […]
