When the U.S. was in the process of losing its 20-year war in Afghanistan – one of the poorest nations on earth – I kept thinking of similarities with the U.S.’s ongoing cruelty and violence and war crimes in Vietnam from the 1940s to 1975. I support good “truth and reconciliation commissions,” such as the one that South Africa did. Some other nations have done them too superficially to be useful. In the 1950s when I was growing up, I remember at home we had a SOLAR and WIND clothes dryer. It used no fossil fuels and no electricity. Dad built it in the 1940s. Mom operated it for decades. It was called a “clothesline.” Every home’s back yard had one.
