While we work seriously on the climate crisis, let’s also be open to humor and satire.

When you buy your new pickup truck, include the “Sea-Level Rise Suspension Package” Buy the Sea-Level-Rise Suspension Package for your next vehicle.docx     When sea level rise covers downtown Olympia, here is something we might do: Scientists keep revising estimates of climate disruption upward – and their time-frame more urgent. You’ve probably seen some of the serious reports from the world’s most knowledgeable climate experts. Very often they issue newer reports saying that the crisis is rapidly getting worse. The newer reports say that extremely serious disruptions and damage will occur sooner than they had been expecting. Those two […]

The Climate Crisis is ALSO a SOCIAL JUSTICE issue!

November 9, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

Some people think of issues as if each was in a separate “silo” unrelated to other issues.  Actually, issues are very deeply and strongly interrelated.  For example, the Climate Crisis is ALSO a SOCIAL JUSTICE issue. This insight should not only broaden our understanding of the climate crisis, but it should also help us strategize more insightfully to reach out and connect the climate crisis with other issues.  We should bring various kinds of people into the climate movement AND bring climate organizers into the movements working on other social justice issues.     This November 21, 2017, article at […]

How to pay for the Green New Deal

November 8, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

Today I posted information from February 7-8-9, 2019, when the Green New Deal resolutions were introduced in Congress.  Those early posts explained why we need the Green New Deal.  Cautious people (and opponents) will ask how to pay for it.  Actually, progressives were ALREADY proposing ways to pay for it BEFORE the House and Senate resolutions were introduced. Here are some VERY EARLY articles that make good economic sense:   Ellen Brown (perhaps our nation’s greatest expert on publicly owned banks) urges public banks as a way to fund a Green New Deal.  Her December 2018 article at the following […]

Green New Deal: Origins and federal legislation

November 8, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

In late 2018 people started talking about the basic ideas that were developed into the February 2019 federal legislation for a Green New Deal — a fairly comprehensive framework that would promote: Bold actions to protect the environment and climate New “green” jobs with good wages Improvements for local communities, housing, infrastructure, etc. And more FDR’s New Deal in the 1930s addressed a variety of issues in positive ways.  Likewise, the Green New Deal would do that nowadays with special emphasis on benefiting the environment and climate.   I will post information to my blog about creative ways to fund […]

Olympia’s people want to CUT the Pentagon budget and INCREASE funding to serve human and environmental needs!

November 5, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

Twice in late summer 2019 the Olympia Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons organized and staffed information tables at public events. Six jars were labeled with different possible uses for our federal budget. We handed each visitor a stack of ten pennies and invited them to put the pennies into the various jars to show how the visitor would choose to spend the federal budget. The results (listed below) were similar for both events, except “Environment and climate” and “Health care” exchanged places for 1st and 2nd priorities. Military has rated lowest priority every time I have conducted this game over […]

Why is “national security” defined ONLY in ways that assume MILITARISM?

October 26, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

The term “national security” is almost always ASSUMED to imply the need for more militarism, more fear of people in other countries, more willingness to fight wars, more military weapons, more military spending, and more nuclear weapons. That is a VERY NARROW channeling of our vision and our thinking. Really, our nation is NOT SECURE in many other ways.  Our nation is NOT SECURE when: Many people are poor Many people are homeless Many people lack decent health care Many people feel alienated from society Many people are very angry Many people own guns that endanger themselves, their families and […]

Chris Hedges wrote about “The Age of Radical Evil”

October 26, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

Chris Hedges keeps writing articles that are powerfully insightful and wise. His articles connect the dots across a number of issues. They are very much worth reading. Here is one from October 2019: https://www.truthdig.com/articles/the-age-of-radical-evil/

This thoughtful, informative article supports the Green New Deal as sensible economics and good for the climate

October 26, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

This article compares the Green New Deal with FDR’s original New Deal. It sees similarities with the Great Depression, but also differences. (For example, the Great Depression was the overriding single issue that dominated national discussion, and nobody denied the existence of the Great Depression, in contrast to the rich, powerful “deniers” of the climate crisis.) Let’s draw upon another similarity. The article says, “The New Deal was made possible by mass movements of insurgent industrial workers, the unemployed, farmers facing foreclosure and ruin, urban dwellers facing eviction, and small businessmen facing extinction, among others.” A few paragraphs later the […]

“Solutionary Rail Is a Win-Win-Win for Climate, Workers, Communities”

October 21, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

The November 2019 interview on “Glen’s Parallax Perspectives” TV series explores Solutionary Rail, a truly creative and exciting solution for several of our nation’s problems. You can watch the interview through the link below — and on TCTV cable channel 22 in Thurston County, as mentioned in the information at the end of this blog post. Solutionary Rail would significantly reduce fossil fuel use and air pollution. It would protect our environment, climate, and public health. It would create jobs, improve working conditions, and help local communities – including seaport areas, transportation hubs, cities, freeways, rural farming areas, and tribes […]

New study shows ANY use of nuclear weapons would hurt environment, climate, health

October 12, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

Nuclear weapons are MUCH MORE than merely a “peace” issue.  The new report shows that ANY use of nuclear weapons would cause extremely serious damage to our health, our environment and our climate. We must ELIMINATE NUCLEAR WEAPONS before they eliminate us!   Physicians for Social Responsibility (www.psr.org) reports this: A groundbreaking new climate study shows just how urgent it is to prevent nuclear war and eliminate nuclear weapons before they eliminate us. “Rapidly expanding nuclear arsenals in Pakistan and India portend regional and global catastrophe,” published in Science Advances on October 2 by leading researchers Owen Brian Toon and […]

The Climate Crisis Means the Wrong People Are Running the World

October 6, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

If ordinary people around the world had political and economic democracy, we never would have allowed the climate crisis to get to this extreme emergency: • We would have paid attention to the science. • We would have sharply restricted big business and other economic powers. • We would have forced governments to take strong and timely action decades ago. The fact that the climate crisis exists now proves that the U.S. and the world are existentially suffering from a lack of political and economic democracy. The following article discusses this: The Climate Crisis Means the Wrong People Are Running […]

The IPCC issued a new climate report focusing on the oceans and frozen regions

October 6, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) issued a new report on the oceans and the cryosphere (earth’s frozen regions).  The IPCC’s new report calls for radical policies that protect marine ecosystems and fully phase out fossil fuels. This article summarizes the report and includes a link to the IPCC’s report:: https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/09/25/un-climate-report-oceans-frozen-regions-warns-unprecedented-transitions-all-aspects
