These smart steps would significantly reduce the likelihood of nuclear war

In Congress, BOTH of the big political parties have been VIGOROUSLY FUNDING Trump’s reckless provocations of a new nuclear arms race.  Trump and Congress have been INCREASING THE DANGER OF GLOBAL NUCLEAR DEVASTATION.  It is not enough to replace Trump.  We must also replace the vast majority of Congressional incumbents — of BOTH parties — because they have been addicted to campaign donations from military weapons manufacturers.  Also, WE MUST AMEND THE CONSTITUTION IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE “BIG MONEY” CORRUPTION of our elections.

My blog’s “Nuclear Weapons” category includes much information about the dangers of nuclear weapons and how to reduce them.  A few good starting points are these:

The Olympia Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (OCANW) is organizing efforts to urge our nearby local governments to support the “Back from the Brink” campaign (See the link immediately above.).  To help our efforts, please contact me at (360) 491-9093 or glenanderson@integra.net.

MORE INFORMATION about the “Back from the Brink” campaign:

In 2017 two nationwide organizations – the Union of Concerned Scientists (www.ucsusa.org) and Physicians for Social Responsibility (www.psr.org) – created the “Back from the Brink” campaign.

The “Back from the Brink” campaign recognizes problems and proposes practical solutions. The campaign has five points that we can support.

We call on the United States to lead a global effort to prevent nuclear war by:
1. Renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first
2. Ending the sole, unchecked authority of any U.S. president to launch a nuclear attack
3. Taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert
4. Cancelling the plan to replace its entire nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons
5. Actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals

Besides pushing our federal government, we can also take actions locally through grassroots organizing such as informing the public and urging local governments, faith-based congregations, and non-profit organizations to support the five points in the “Back from the Brink” campaign.

The “Back from the Brink” campaign includes resources. They have helped state and local governments, religious bodies, and other entities pass resolutions. They bird-dog electoral candidates and take many other smart actions. House Resolution 302 includes all 5 of their points.

They also urge slashing funding for nuclear weapons and using the savings to help fund the Green New Deal.

See much information at www.preventnuclearwar.org, including their RESOURCES section (www.preventnuclearwar.org/resources).

A variety of other organizations have joined the effort.  These include the Unitarian-Universalist Association and other faith-based groups, including some Catholic ones.   The Catholic peace organization Pax Christi USA and their blog support the “Back from the Brink” campaign.  See “The Spirituality that Motivates Pax Christi USA’s Back from the Brink Campaign” at https://paxchristiusa.org/2019/12/05/the-spirituality-that-motivates-pax-christi-usas-back-from-the-brink-campaign/   See this case study from a local Pax Christi USA group working to pass an anti-nuclear resolution in Maryland:  https://paxchristiusa.org/2019/11/11/case-study-steps-toward-passing-a-back-from-the-brink-resolution/
