Iran War Powers Resolution:

An excellent source of information — and advocacy — for peace is the excellent Quaker-based lobbying organization:  Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL, www.fcnl.org).

On February 13, 2020, the Senate passed S.J. Res. 68, Virginia Senator Tim Kaine’s Iran War Powers Resolution. Eight Republican senators joined their Democratic colleagues to make clear that Congress and the American people do not support an unauthorized war with Iran.

The bill goes back to the House for final approval, then on to Trump, who will certainly veto it.  We will need 2/3 majorities in both the House and the Senate in order to override the expected veto.

Clearly, most members of Congress do NOT want another stupid, endless war in that part of the world.  Congress’s passage probably helped to calm Iran’s fears somewhat.  This could reduce the risk of miscalculations and misunderstandings that could accidentally escalate into more violence.

We need to keep pressuring Congress to return to diplomacy, reassert its war authority, and prevent conflict with Iran.
