House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi and the House Democrats allowed Trump to ESCALATE his crimes and his violations of the Constitution for almost three years. Trump is a bully, so he recognized the Democrats’ timidity as EXONERATION and an opportunity to ESCALATE into doing worse and worse things.
From Trump’s VERY FIRST DAY IN OFFICE he was using his presidential power to enrich himself. This BLATANTLY VIOLATES the Constitution’s explicit prohibition against “emoluments” (a late-1700s word for this kind of corruption), both for enriching himself from domestic sources and from foreign sources by exploiting his powers as President of the U.S.
But House Democrats refused to pay attention. Even though they were in the minority until after the November 2018 election, they could have been accumulating evidence and used that as soon as Democrats gained a majority in January 2019. But NO, THEY COVERED UP Trump’s crimes by refusing to call out these MANY VERY EXPLICIT AND OBVIOUS VIOLATIONS of the U.S. Constitution.
Trump was committing other crimes and violating the Constitution in many other ways too, but INSTEAD OF TAKING ACTION, Nancy Pelosi and the House Democratic leadership sat on their hands and kept saying they would WAIT FOR THE MUELLER REPORT. However, Mueller’s investigation covered on a tiny sliver of Trump’s many, many crimes and Constitutional violations, so THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO WAIT for Mueller’s report.
Finally the report did come out and identify IMPEACHABLE OFFENSES, but still Pelosi and Democratic leaders STILL REFUSED TO TAKE ACTION.
Meanwhile Trump was KIDNAPPING TENS OF THOUSANDS OF IMMIGRANT CHILDREN AWAY FROM THEIR FAMILIES — and imprisoning them in cages — and denying them due process — and failing to provide necessary medical care, so many these children died. But Pelosi and the Dems REFUSED TO TAKE ACTION.
The list of Trump’s crimes and Constitutional violations goes on and on.
THE ONLY THING THAT UPSET THE DEMOCRATS ENOUGH TO PURSUE IMPEACHMENT WAS TRUMP’S EFFORTS TO HURT JOE BIDEN, A DEMOCRATIC POLITICIAN who wants to run against Trump in 2020.
Republicans can claim that impeaching Trump for that smacks of mere partisanship — and they are right!
If the Democrats had any respect for the rule of law — and any respect for the Constitution — and any respect for their own oaths of office “to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” they would have impeached Trump long ago for very substantive reasons.
Indeed, PUBLIC OPINION — ACROSS THE POLITICAL SPECTRUM — ALREADY CONDEMNED TRUMP FOR KIDNAPPING CHILDREN!
And PUBLIC OPINION — ACROSS THE POLITICAL SPECTRUM — ALREADY CONDEMNED TRUMP FOR USING HIS PRESIDENTIAL POWER TO ENRICH HIMSELF (“EMOLUMENTS”)!
Evidence was ALREADY clear, abundant, and overwhelmingly damning!
The public would EASILY have understood the facts!
By contrast, Trump’s Ukraine-related crimes are complex and hard for ordinary people to follow.
When a bully is not held accountable, he feels free to continue his bullying — and to escalate it. Nancy Pelosi and House Democratic leaders have given Trump a free ride for nearly three years. They could — and SHOULD — have stopped his abuses LONG AGO. Trump should ALREADY have been removed from office!
