In late 1976 and early 1977 Glen Anderson researched how military hurts the economy in systemic ways — beyond merely the budget trade-offs — and researched the possibilities of converting our national economy and Washington State’s economy to peaceful purposes instead of militarism.  He produced a well footnoted report and worked with other people on this.  The one-page summary at a link above has basic information.  You may contact Glen to borrow a copy of the report and/or to schedule a speaking engagement on this subject.
