Electing Democrats will NOT protect us from nuclear weapons

August 14, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

• Both political parties have been funding nuclear weapons and have been supporting their use since the 1940s. Franklin D. Roosevelt started building them. Harry Truman dropped two on Japan, killing many thousands of innocent civilians. John Kennedy fully expected to use them during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. Barack Obama authorized the replacement of ALL U.S. nuclear weapons (at a cost of much more than $1 TRILLION). Congress’s Democrats have been funding nuclear weapons since the 1940s. The crisis is truly bi-partisan! • Overall, the U.S.’s foreign policy has been bi-partisan for many decades. Regardless of which political party […]

Nuclear weapons violate international law in several ways

August 14, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

• Nuclear weapons violate International Law in many ways. They violate the United Nations Charter. The U.S. has been violating the 1970 Non-Proliferation Treaty. In 1996 the World Court ruled against nuclear weapons. In 2017 the United Nations passed a treaty prohibiting them, and 50 nations signed it promptly. • The U.S. Constitution’s Article VI declares that “all treaties … shall be the supreme law of the land.” When the U.S. violates the United Nations Charter, various treaties and various aspects of international law, the U.S. is thereby violating the U.S. Constitution. • After World War II, the U.S. led […]

Stop the government from wasting $1.7 TRILLION on new nuclear weapons

August 14, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

• Nuclear weapons are horribly expensive. The U.S. government is planning to spend $1.7 TRILLION over the next 30 years to replace all of our nuclear bombs, missiles, submarines, etc., with brand new ones, including some designed to be more “usable.” To pay for them, Congress will want to cut many billions of dollars from useful pro-grams that help people. • On October 31, 2017, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that the Obama Administration’s 2017 plans for nuclear forces would cost $1.2 trillion (in 2017 dollars) over the 2017–2046 period. Other expert sources have estimated even higher amounts. Trump […]

Accidents and “near-misses” with nuclear weapons occur often.

August 14, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

The government wants the public to think that safety precautions are adequate to protect us from nuclear weapons accidents and “near-misses,” but actually accidents and “near-misses” occur much more often than people realize.  Since the 1940s, a great many accidents and near-misses have nearly caused horrible destruction, but the government and news media refuse to report them honestly. • Search the internet for “nuclear weapons accidents” and see startling information about a great many accidents that easily could have caused horrible destruction. See much information at http://www.atomicarchive.com/Almanac/Brokenarrows_static.shtml and even more examples at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_military_nuclear_accidents • Since 1950 there have been 32 […]

Nuclear weapons do NOT “deter” other nations or keep us safe.

August 14, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Actually, they provoke other nations and could destroy us in just a few minutes. • Nuclear weapons do NOT protect us. The notion that having nuclear weapons will “deter” other nations from attacking us is fatally flawed. Nuclear weapons threaten other nations and provoke those nations into building their own nuclear weapons. Global tensions rise. The “deterrence” theory is a reckless psychological experiment full of errors at the human and technical levels. If anything goes haywire, nuclear weapons could destroy us in just a few minutes. The “deterrence” theory leads to mutual suicide! • The U.S. designed nuclear weapons for […]

A court victory for civil resistance vs. nuclear weapons!

July 27, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

On May 12, 2018, Mother’s Day, members of Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action blocked the road leading into the Trident Nuclear Submarine base at Bangor in Kitsap County WA.  (They were on the county’s side of the line, not on the federal side.)  On Friday July 27 the defendants had their mitigation hearings.  Larry Kerschner, a Vietnam veteran who is now a pacifist living in Centralia WA presented his statement to Judge Jeffrey J. Jahns.  Larry was pleased and surprised when the judge responded to Larry’s statement by reducing his $68 fine to zero.  The judge reduced all the […]

July 27, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

This document was created in 1985 and is still an important and positive alternative to our current crisis.  May we all join in! Dozens of persons (including me) signed this document on Fourth of July weekend of 1985 in a ceremony outside the Trident Nuclear Submarine base at Bangor in Kitsap County WA.  Ten years later dozens more signed it in a renewal of the original ceremony.  MAY WE ALL JOIN TOGETHER IN AFFIRMING IT NOW, decades later! Declaration of Independence from Nuclear Weapons We are people living in the shadow of nuclear annihilation. We recognize that our present way […]

3 existential crises need our vigorous action now!

July 25, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Many issues demand our attention and action.  Right now, THREE stand out as EXISTENTIAL CRISES.  We must solve these in order to protect human civilization from destruction: #1:  Nuclear weapons are increasingly likely to destroy the world: Decades after the Cold War ended, nuclear weapons still persist.  Giant corporations and the politicians they own have convinced Obama and Trump to BUILD ALL NEW NUCLEAR WEAPONS to replace the U.S.’s ENTIRE ARSENAL with new bombs, missiles, submarines, bombers, etc.  They are projected to cost $1.7 TRILLION cost over the next 30 years, so to pay for this, Congress will be slashing […]

U.S. govt’s official thinking about nuclear weapons: Utterly Bizarre and Bi-Partisan

July 21, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Do you remember “With enough shovels …”? President Reagan’s Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Strategic and Theater Nuclear Forces was T.K. Jones.  He believed we could easily survive nuclear war.  Here is what he said we should do if a nuclear attack was coming: “Dig a hole, cover it with a couple of doors and then throw three feet of dirt on top….  It’s the dirt that does it … if there are enough shovels to go around, everybody’s going to make it.” This is utterly preposterous on several grounds, including: If you are in the little hole you […]

Climate organizing must range from global to local levels

July 21, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

This morning I attended Olympia WA’s “Zero Hour” climate rally that was organized by young person.  The main organizer is 13 years old, and she spoke briefly and capably.  All over the world — and in many U.S. locations — young people organized “Zero Hour” rallies and marches to convey the urgency of the climate crisis.  Young people mobilized to demand an end to the abuses that are curtailing their futures — and to demand sustainable solutions.  For more information see www.thisiszerohour.org –> The climate crisis is a WORLDWIDE crisis. –> Decades ago Tip O’Neill, the Speaker of the U.S. […]

Avoid the anti-Russia hype that promotes a new Cold War.

July 17, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Both of the big political parties — Republicans and Democrats – are stuck in their own agendas.  Neither of the big party really supports peace.  Each wants confrontation with Russia for different reasons.  Ordinary people must resist the anti-Russia hype and a new Cold War.The American people must assert that we want peace, not a new Cold War. Norman Solomon’s article at this link shows smart insights: https://www.truthdig.com/articles/climb-down-from-the-summit-of-hostile-propaganda/

July 11, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Lilly Adams from the new statewide coalition Washington Against Nuclear Weapons (www.wanwcoalition.org) provided this hot news:   President Trump and President Putin will meet on July 16th to discuss a range of issues, including nuclear weapons policies and the New START Treaty. PSR has created a simple one-pager with background information and recommendations.  Read it here:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1j2lWpLCTvJiz2NIyR2SwIAf15wP48ct-Y8Ms_3HFWxQ/edit For more in-depth information, see the Arms Control Association’s resources here:   https://www.armscontrol.org/pressroom/2018-06/trump-putin-summit-what-you-need-know   The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons just published some fascinating and encouraging survey results from European “umbrella states” that host US nuclear weapons. Their findings: Europeans reject US nuclear […]
