3 existential crises need our vigorous action now!

Many issues demand our attention and action.  Right now, THREE stand out as EXISTENTIAL CRISES.  We must solve these in order to protect human civilization from destruction:

#1:  Nuclear weapons are increasingly likely to destroy the world:

Decades after the Cold War ended, nuclear weapons still persist.  Giant corporations and the politicians they own have convinced Obama and Trump to BUILD ALL NEW NUCLEAR WEAPONS to replace the U.S.’s ENTIRE ARSENAL with new bombs, missiles, submarines, bombers, etc.  They are projected to cost $1.7 TRILLION cost over the next 30 years, so to pay for this, Congress will be slashing everything that helps people.

As if that were not bad enough, some of the new nuclear weapons are designed to be more “usable,” so the U.S. will be much more likely to start a nuclear war.  Now we have a mad-man in the White House who feeds his insatiable ego by acting like a bully and attacking vulnerable people.  He has threatened to attack a number of nations.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved their “Doomsday Clock” to 2 1/2 minutes before midnight, and in early 2018 they moved it to only 2 minutes before midnight — closer to global destruction than it has been since the early 1950s.  See https://thebulletin.org/2018-doomsday-clock-statement/

#2:  The climate crisis is increasingly disrupting ecosystems and life on earth:

When the “Doomsday Clock” was moved closer to midnight, the scientists said the climate crisis was an important factor, along with nuclear weapons.  Human behavior (especially burning fossil fuels) has been disrupting the climate in many ways.  This affects everything else by causing droughts, extreme storms, flooding, wildfires, crop failures, massive human migrations, and other problems.  The Pentagon has long recognized that the climate crisis endangers world security and provokes conflicts.  The Trump regime’s climate denialism has been purging this information from Pentagon reports, but science remains true whether you choose to believe it or not.

The climate crisis really is putting human civilization in extreme danger.  Extreme disruptions will provoke wars, endanger democracy, and cause other extreme problems to our survival.

#3:  The Trump regime and the Republican Party are imposing fascism upon us, while the institutional Democratic Party fails to protect us:

The two existential dangers mentioned above — nuclear weapons and the climate crisis — are being accelerated by the Republican Party and especially by Trump’s insane and corrupt abuses to the USA.  He imposes his own ego and his own business interests ahead of the national interest, and — indeed — ahead of Truth by denouncing any factual reporting as “fake news.”  He demands the kind of blind obedience and absolute loyalty that dictators do.  Indeed, he buddies up with the world’s worst dictators.  He violates the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law in many ways, and he claims to be above the law.  He is causing constitutional crises.  In the summer of 2018 he wants the next U.S. Supreme Court Justice — a person who will very likely rule on Trump’s constitutional violations and criminal cases — to be someone who is on record as believing that the president is above the law.

The Republican Party has fallen into full support for Trump’s recklessness and abuses.  This includes the prominent Republicans who had denounced Trump during the 2016 electoral primary season.  Extreme Republicans dominate all three branches of the federal government.  The U.S. Supreme Court stopped being a neutral body some years ago and has become a highly partisan tool of the Republican Party especially since it prevented an honest count of Florida’s ballots in 2000 and simply appointed George W. Bush to become President.

The institutional Democratic Party is failing to protect us.  The Party is trying to suppress the progressive wing and is actively opposing some progressive candidates, despite voters’ support for them.  Many incumbent Democrats are owned by giant corporations.  Many Democrats support the U.S. empire and our endless wars.  Many Democrats are perverting the current crisis about Russia into a new Cold War.  Most Democrats are failing to support using impeachment or the Constitution’s 25th Amendment to remove him from office.

Democracy, civilization and planet earth are in extreme danger now.  They might not survive the three existential dangers.

We need vigorous, strategically smart nonviolent grassroots organizing.

See the “Nonviolence” and “Organizing & Activism” parts of this blog, www.parallaxperspectives.org.

I can offer a series of 6 workshops on Nonviolent Grassroots Organizing.  If you’d like to pull together at least 5 other persons and provide a location, I would like to do this.  Please contact me at (360) 491-9093 glenanderson@integra.net
