Virginia is the first Southern state to abolish the death penalty

In the U.S., the South has been executing more people than any other part of the nation.  But the big news now is that in early February 2021 Virginia became the first Southern state to abolish the death penalty.  Here are two articles about this:   Both chambers of the Virginia state legislature voted to abolish the state’s death penalty in early February 2021. A few months ago Trump and his Attorney General William Barr scheduled MANY executions to occur before Trump’s scheduled end of office on January 20, 2021.  The federal death penalty is every bit as cruel and unjust as the death penalty that is allowed by various states’ laws. On December 4, 2020, Public Citizen (www.citizen.org), the non-profit organization Ralph Nader founded half a century ago, issued this urgent action alert: Please read, and please take action. Trump’s DOJ rushed a no-bid contract for lethal injection drugs for MORE executions

Progress toward abolishing the death penalty was slow starting in 1828 and then increased, especially in the past few decades.  This video shows progress on a world map during these past two centuries. The short video ends by saying that dozens of the nations that still retain the death penalty in their laws have imposed moratoria on actually conducting executions. Federal death penalty: Trump escalates cruelty and more executions before leaving White House
