On March 23, 2020, during the Coronavirus pandemic, Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said this:
“The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war. That is why today I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world. It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives.”

Peace Action (www.peaceaction.org) says:
COVID-19 has shown in sharp contrast how badly screwed up our national security priorities are. As the Center for Global Development points out, the Pentagon is “a woefully insufficient, inefficient, and expensive tool to combat a pandemic. What is needed most right now are scientists and medical workers collaborating across countries.”
A global ceasefire would allow scientists, medical workers, and humanitarians to reach populations that are most vulnerable to the threat of COVID-19. The same people most devastated by hostility and wars–women and children, people with disabilities, the marginalized, displaced and refugees–are also the most likely to suffer devastating losses to this pandemic.
