Trump is hell-bent to overthrow Iran’s government for several reasons.
Trump hired John Bolton and Mike Pompeo for very high level positions in his administration. Both are extremely aggressive opponents of Iran and opponents of honest diplomacy in general.
Trump is utterly subservient to two nations that have long wanted to attack Iran: Israel and Saudi Arabia.
This article explains clearly what Trump is trying to do: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/11/5/1809961/-What-does-Secretary-of-State-Pompeo-mean-by-restore-democracy-in-Iran?detail=emaildksp

The older information I report here is still useful:
For many years Iran has been in the news, but much of what the US’s news media and politicians say has been grossly inaccurate, mean-spirited and has made it harder for us to seek peace.
A few days after Iran’s June 2013 election, I interviewed two knowledgeable Iranian-Americans about important aspects of Iran’s history and politics that are still highly relevant now. We discussed the U.S. government’s continuing hostility to that nation and what the Iranian people had done decades before and in recent years. I interviewed these two experts for the Olympia Fellowship of Reconciliation’s September 2013 TV program, which:
• Reviews Iran’s history
• Provides for context for understanding what is really happening now.
• Corrects some of the misinformation we’ve been hearing for many years.
• Suggests more constructive ways to promote peace with Iran.
