Better than defeating Trump’s supporters, let’s heal them and convert them to better values. And let’s heal ourselves too.

June 4, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

In the past few decades the U.S. has become increasingly polarized — and increasingly rigid — and mutually hateful to the people on the “wrong” side of issues.  This is NOT sustainable for democracy, nor for a free society, nor for human rights.  People in each of the two big political parties want to DEFEAT members of the other party through dynamics that seem warlike or genocidal. Trump has escalated the polarization horribly, not only across political parties, but also across races, nationalities, religions, sexes, sexual orientations, economic classes, and other demographic variables.  THIS IS NOT SUSTAINABLE, but people in […]

Visualize — and create — a government “of the people, by the people, for the people.”

June 4, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

On June 4, 2018, Trump tweeted, “I have the absolute right to PARDON myself.” His statement and statements by Rudy Giuliani and some other extreme Trump loyalists expose the Trump regime as a dictatorship. The Trumpists think he is above the law, and that he can simply disregard the Constitution in his pursuit of power and wealth.   Since he started running for President in 2015, Trump has commanded — and mainstream news media have utterly yielded — the power to be every day’s #1 news story.  Trump has tricked everyone into talking about him all the time.  (Yes, I’m […]

Several ways to vigorously reform our criminal justice system

June 3, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

The U.S.’s criminal justice system — like so many other aspects of American society — is profoundly dysfunctional, cruel, and wasteful. Thoughtful people have been urging humane reforms for many years.  More and more people are advocating positive changes.  Here are some reforms we really need now.  Grassroots organizing can help to accomplish them.   In order to change the system, we need to change how we talk about it.  Some commonly used words and expressions keep us trapped in the unjust status quo.  Here are five ways to improve our effectiveness when we talk about criminal punishment and mass […]

Guns: Several items of interest

June 3, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Many years ago the National Rifle Association (NRA) was an organization that served — and was funded by — hunters, target shooters, etc.  Over the years most of the NRA’s budget has become funded by gun manufacturers rather than ordinary people.  Those corporations want to sell more and more guns.  That is why even though many gun owners support responsible laws to reduce gun violence, the NRA (funded by gun manufacturers) lobbies and donates to politicians’ campaigns in order to PREVENT SENSIBLE LAWS that most gun owners actually support. A few years ago Congress was considering legislation to limit sales […]

9 Ways Authoritarianism Is Taking Hold Under Trump

May 31, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

As you know, I read a huge amount of information.  Thom Hartmann’s article at the link below consolidates much solid information into CRUCIALLY IMPORTANT information that the American people need to understand. Trump and Trumpism are imposing horrible authoritarianism upon the U.S.  This is an extremely serious — actually existential — danger to American freedom and constitutional democracy. Trump’s authoritarianism abuses many aspects of American society. The article below connects many of the issues we care about, including peace, social justice, environment/climate, economics, and so forth.  The article ends with a call for nonviolent organizing to rise up against Trump’s […]

To HELP the Poor People’s Campaign, OPPOSE Nuclear Weapons

May 27, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

All issues are interconnected.  We keep seeing this in many contexts.  We can use the interconnections to bring people together who are working on various issues to help each other see that our issues are inherently linked, so we can make more progress by working together and exerting mutual leverage to help us make progress on all of the  interconnected issues. On Monday May 28, 2018, the weekly Poor People’s Campaign gathering at the Washington State Capitol will focus on peace-related issues.  I wrote a handout linking nuclear weapons and the Poor People’s Campaign, and I’ll offer it to the […]

Two creative nonviolent ways to protest the abuse of the environment

May 26, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Here is a creative nonviolent way to protect forests from abuse:  Women are marrying trees in Mexico. See this article: https://www.treehugger.com/conservation/why-are-women-marrying-trees-mexico.html   Excessive plastic is an environmental problem. Here is a simple solution anyone can do to nonviolently resist excessive packaging: In about 1969 a friend used to unwrap packages after paying for them at the retail stores. He said he did not want to buy the packaging — just the products inside. The stores could throw away the unnecessary packaging. Perhaps we need a NATIONWIDE MOVEMENT to force companies to STOP EXCESSIVE PACKAGING.

Changing our economic system can reduce climate disruption

May 26, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

The vast majority of people who say they want to protect the climate are stuck within the confines of our current economic system.  This severely restricts the progress we can make.  If we really want to make significant progress, we must change our economic system. In addition to the article by Naomi Klein that I posted just now, see this article from another source.  This website has a variety of information, so look for materials that are relevant to the economic aspects of the climate crisis: http://systemchangenotclimatechange.org/

How can we challenge this dominant but destructive economic assumption?

May 24, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Embedded very deeply in our American culture — and many other nations’ cultures too — is an assumption that is embedded so deeply that nobody recognizes it, let alone challenge it. The assumption is this:  It is OK if what I do kills people, so long as I’m making money from what I do. At the surface level — the explicit level — if you were to ask people whether it is moral to kill other people, they would say “no.” But below the surface — at the implicit level — our society tolerates behaviors that knowingly kill people because […]

An 11-point Agenda for America’s Economic Future

May 23, 2018 GlenAnderson 0

Progressives spend much time protesting what we oppose. We should spend much more time organizing to accomplish what we want instead. Here is a good example for progressive economic and social justice: See the 11-point Agenda for America’s Economic Future at this link: http://campaignforamericasfuture.org/?link_id=4&can_id=1d662460c0abb8939c5044c82927552b&source=email-pledge-news-hightower-lowdown-pledge-issue&email_referrer=email_358386&email_subject=pledge-news-hightower-lowdown-pledge-issue Read Jim Hightower’s supportive article about the Agenda for America’s Economic Future at this link: https://hightowerlowdown.org/article/economic-agenda/?link_id=0&can_id=1d662460c0abb8939c5044c82927552b&source=email-pledge-news-hightower-lowdown-pledge-issue&email_referrer=email_358386&email_subject=pledge-news-hightower-lowdown-pledge-issue

Profound Nonviolence for a Truly Just Society

In slightly more than three pages, the article at this link provides wisdom, compassion, insights, and encouragement to fix our society’s problems. I believe you will find that reading this is a good use of your time. Here is the link: Profound Nonviolence for a Truly Just Society
