The “Back from the Brink” campaign promotes FIVE SMART CHANGES to reduce the danger of nuclear war.

Nuclear weapons are a VERY SERIOUS issue.  But grassroots people and many organizations are ORGANIZING SMART CHANGES in our nation’s policies in order to reduce the likelihood of nuclear war.

The “Back from the Brink” campaign proposes five policy solutions to prevent nuclear war.

See the website www.preventnuclearwar.org and this page about their five policy solutions:  www.preventnuclearwar.org/our-five-policy-solutions/

In 2017 two nationwide organizations – the Union of Concerned Scientists (www.ucsusa.org) and Physicians for Social Responsibility (www.psr.org) – created the “Back from the Brink” campaign. Some other organizations have joined the effort.

The “Back from the Brink” campaign recognizes problems and proposes practical solutions. The campaign has five points that we can support.

We call on the United States to lead a global effort to prevent nuclear war by:
1. Renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first
2. Ending the sole, unchecked authority of any U.S. president to launch a nuclear attack
3. Taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert
4. Cancelling the plan to replace its entire nuclear arsenal with enhanced weapons
5. Actively pursuing a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals

Besides pushing our federal government, we can also take actions locally through grassroots organizing such as informing the public and urging local governments, faith-based congregations, and non-profit organizations to support the five points in the “Back from the Brink” campaign.  A growing number of local governments have actually taken formal actions to support this!

The “Back from the Brink” campaign includes resources. They have helped state and local governments, religious bodies, and other entities pass resolutions. They bird-dog electoral candidates and take many other smart actions. In the U.S. Congress, House Resolution 302 (H.Res. 302) includes all 5 of their points.

The campaign urges slashing funding for nuclear weapons and using the savings to help fund the Green New Deal.
