Russian nuclear-powered missile explodes, kills people, and contaminates area. We must STOP the new arms race!

This outrageous accident on August 8, 2019, should be yet another wake-up call to the whole world.  We must abolish nuclear weapons!

Nuclear warheads are placed on missiles, but Russia designed a missile that itself is powered by a small nuclear reactor onboard.  This power source would enable Russia’s nuclear missile to stay aloft for a very long time and attack a target anywhere in the world.

On August 8, 2019, one of these missiles blew up, killed some scientists and engineers, and contaminated the nearby geographical area.  Russia designed this horrible nuclear-powered missile in order to overcome the U.S.’s “ballistic missile defense” system (the recklessly stupid “Star Wars” system Reagan started in 1983). The U.S. and USSR had agreed to the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) treaty in 1972, but George W. Bush pulled the U.S. out of the ABM Treaty in 2002.

The Trump regime has been the escalating nuclear weapons crisis and pulled the U.S. out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty. Trump’s recklessly hawkish National Security Advisor John Bolton is urging Trump to abandon the New START Treaty, which went into effect in 2011 and will expire in 2021 unless we extend it.

See this information from Global Zero (www.globalzero.org), a well-informed nationwide non-profit organization working against nuclear weapons.  On August 14, 2019, Global Zero issued this statement about the disaster:  https://www.globalzero.org/updates/media/press-releases/after-russian-explosion-global-zero-warns-against-new-nuclear-arms-race/?link_id=0&can_id=1d662460c0abb8939c5044c82927552b&source=email-icymi-after-russian-explosion-global-zero-warns-against-new-nuclear-arms-race&email_referrer=email_596817&email_subject=icymi-after-russian-explosion-global-zero-warns-against-new-nuclear-arms-race
