Many people don’t understand why a large majority of evangelical Christians support Trump. Several persons have written articles that provide smart answers to that question.
I already posted to my blog a very thorough article about the worldview that currently dominates the U.S. Part of that article explains the merger between the Religious Right and the Republican Party that occurred in the 1970s-1980s and has persisted since then. OPEN THIS LINK — http://parallaxperspectives.org/tv-programs-part-2-of-choose-a-better-worldview-to-build-a-better-world — and see the thorough summary I wrote for NOVEMBER 2018 and also DECEMBER 2018. Look at the table of contents for each, and then read the religion-related sections of each summary.
This article says there are five varieties of American evangelicalism — and some are dangerous: https://www.alternet.org/2018/12/american-evangelicalism-has-varieties-and-these-are-the-ones-you-should-be-worried-about/
Chris Hedges is an excellent investigative journalist (and ordained Presbyterian minister). I have read many of his articles and one or more of his books. He has very smart insights that I agree with. Recently he spoke about a number of aspects of the U.S.’s current political crisis, including the role of right-wing Christians supporting bad political issues. Part of his speech in this video explains insights for understanding right-wing Christianity’s fascination with the End Times, etc. See this video starting at 48:53 This part of the video goes to 53:54. Some Evangelicals believe God sent Trump to be our king: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/01/01/1822839/-Evangelicals:God-Sent-Trump-to-be-King?detail=emaildkre
On Dec. 31, 2018, the New York Times published an article by Katherine Stewart that focuses on Christian evangelical cohesion supporting Trump. She quotes an influential evangelical who declared “I believe the 45th president is meant to be an Isaiah 45 Cyrus,” who will “restore the crumbling walls that separate us from cultural collapse.” He is invoking the passage Isaiah 45 in the Bible which tells the story of Cyrus, an ancient king of Persia, a non-believer supposedly put in place and guided by God to restore ancient Israel to greatness by triumphing over and enslaving enemies. Katherine Stewart concludes: “This isn’t the religious right we thought we knew. The Christian nationalist movement today is authoritarian, paranoid and patriarchal at its core. They aren’t fighting a culture war. They’re making a direct attack on democracy itself. They want it all. And in Mr. Trump, they have found a man who does not merely serve their cause, but also satisfies their craving for a certain kind of political leadership.” Read her article about the “Christian nationalists” at this link: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/31/opinion/trump-evangelicals-cyrus-king.html
Many right-wing Christians want to impose THEIR PERVERTED kind of Christianity upon the U.S., just like the Taliban did with THEIR perverted kind of Islam in Afghanistan. They deny that the Constitution separation of Church and State. But they are wrong, and the Constitution’s First Amendment and its history and founders all wanted the “wall” separating them. See this thoughtful article from a great advocacy non-profit org, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State (www.au.org): https://www.au.org/blogs/wall-of-separation/the-religious-right-says-church-state-separation-isnt-in-the-constitution?utm_source=blogdigest&utm_medium=email
