In his four years in the White House, Trump has delighted in being as cruel as possible to people – especially people who are vulnerable because of race, nationality, poverty, and other factors. Trump’s cruelty has included escalating the federal death penalty. Now – just before leaving office on January 20 – Trump is escalating his cruelty in several ways.
On July 26, 2019, I posted this update to my blog. After a 16-year gap with NO federal executions, Trump and his Attorney General William Barr began planning to execute people again. Now Trump is escalating his cruelty even further. The Democracy Now! broadcast on November 30, 2020, reported these alarming news items:
1. Trump plans to execute FIVE persons promptly (four black men and one white woman who is severely mentally ill and had suffered many years of sexual abuse – the first woman executed by the federal government in 70 years) during his Lame Duck days. 3. The Trump filed a new rule allowing the federal government to use more ways to execute people, including firing squads, poison gas and the electric chair. There are serious practical and humanitarian reasons for not doing that.
