We are pushing LOCAL governments to oppose nuclear weapons in several ways

May 23, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

The Olympia Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (OCANW) is planning now to urge local governments to support the “Back from the Brink” proposal.  That proposal rolls together FIVE PARTS into one smart package that would significantly reduce the likelihood of nuclear war.  See information about it at www.preventnuclearwar.org That website’s home page includes a tab for RESOURCES that can help people at local levels organize to convince their local governments to pass resolutions supporting the package of “Back from the Brink” proposals. Recently I posted relevant information to my blog.  SEE THIS LINK:  http://parallaxperspectives.org/the-back-from-the-brink-campaign-promotes-five-smart-changes-to-reduce-the-danger-of-nuclear-war   There is a long, successful […]

Stop Thurston County’s new prison for women

May 13, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

TOO MANY PEOPLE ARE IN PRISON! A sensible approach would be to REDUCE THE NUMBER of people in prison. Instead, a plan is underway to BUILD A BIGGER PRISON for women, to be located in the southern part of Thurston County. The attached information summarizes reasons for opposing a NEW PRISON for women in southern Thurston County WA.  The meeting this attachment announces has passed, but we still need public opposition. See information in this attachment: New prison in Thurston County for women

Here are several smart articles about the Green New Deal

May 1, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

The Green New Deal was devised for good reasons. Before the 2018 election season ramped up, people wanted to stimulate populist constituencies – including those who were not yet active in the climate movement – to start supporting bold climate actions. For this purpose – and to generate support from the labor movement and from areas that needed jobs – a federal jobs program made sense. Now people do understand at a visceral level that we need bold actions for the climate AND youth organizing such as the climate strikes AND grassroots organizing to meet the needs of local communities, […]

“Affordable Housing: Facts vs. Myths about the ‘Missing Middle'”

March 29, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

The April 2020 episode of “Glen’s Parallax Perspectives TV program helps the public understand the serious shortage of housing that is truly affordable for people who are not rich.  Local governments in Olympia and elsewhere want to solve the problem, but they have misdiagnosed the problem, so they have proposed the wrong solutions, such as the so-called “Missing Middle.” This interview and the compelling graphs we show help you understand the real reasons for the problem – and why the “Missing Middle” would NOT solve the problems. We need better solutions. For background Glen encouraged people to watch his March […]

On Fri. Feb. 7, 2020, the WA State Senate committee PASSED SJM 8006 to urge Congress to reduce likelihood of nuclear war!

February 7, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

Today I joined a good number of members of the Olympia Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons and our statewide coalition Washington Against Nuclear Weapons (www.wanwcoalition.org) attended the WA State Senate hearing on SJM 8006, and some of us (including me) testified in support. The committee PASSED the resolution, so it goes to Senate Rules Committee, which we hope will move it to the Senate Floor for final passage. Then it would go the relevant House committee for further action. Each of us had only 90 seconds to testify to the committee about SJM 8006.  Here is basically what I told […]

While we work seriously on the climate crisis, let’s also be open to humor and satire.

When you buy your new pickup truck, include the “Sea-Level Rise Suspension Package” Buy the Sea-Level-Rise Suspension Package for your next vehicle.docx     When sea level rise covers downtown Olympia, here is something we might do: Scientists keep revising estimates of climate disruption upward – and their time-frame more urgent. You’ve probably seen some of the serious reports from the world’s most knowledgeable climate experts. Very often they issue newer reports saying that the crisis is rapidly getting worse. The newer reports say that extremely serious disruptions and damage will occur sooner than they had been expecting. Those two […]

Please read (or re-read) that blog post and send me your e-mail suggestions for this topic: What bold, good reality would you want for four years from now — October 2023? Local people’s priorities for the federal budget are the OPPOSITE of Congress’s.

September 27, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

Twice in late summer 2019 the Olympia Coalition to Abolish Nuclear Weapons organized and staffed information booths at public events (Olympia’s Harbor Days from Fri. Aug. 30 to Sun. Sept. 1, and Olympia’s International Peace Day event on Sat. Sept. 21). I labeled six jars with different possible uses for our federal budget.  Our volunteers handed each visitor to our booth a stack of ten pennies and invited them to put the pennies into the various jars to show how the visitor would choose to spend the federal budget. The results (listed below) were similar for both events, except “Environment […]

“Replace Negativity and Centrism with Bold Progress.”

September 27, 2019 GlenAnderson 0

A great many issues are important, but neither of the two big political parties is doing nearly enough to solve these problems.  While voting has some value, the most progress in solving problems will occur when ordinary people organize nonviolently, strategically, and vigorously from the grassroots. The article I am attaching below fleshes this out briefly.  For more information, see resources I’ve posted to this blog’s “Organizing” category. During 2019 The Olympian is publishing five op-eds that I am writing.  The one at this link was published in the newspaper on Fri. Sept. 27, 2019: BOC — 2019.09.19 — FINAL […]
