Increasingly in recent decades the U.S. has been PROVOKING A NEW ARMS RACE IN SPACE, despite the treaty that prohibits militarizing “outer space.” Every October (in 2019 it’s October 5-12) an excellent non-profit organization organizes “Keep Space for Peace Week.” This “International Week of Protest to Stop the Militarization of Space” features activities in many locations in the U.S. and elsewhere. The Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space (www.space4peace.org) is very knowledgeable. Their blog (http://space4peace.blogspot.com/) has more information and help for people who want to organize to protect space for peace.
The Olympian published my newest op-ed. See this link: https://www.theolympian.com/opinion/op-ed/article235448132.html? Click to hide the ad so you can see my opening paragraph about public opinion polls.
Nuclear weapons are MUCH MORE than merely a “peace” issue. The new report shows that ANY use of nuclear weapons would cause extremely serious damage to our health, our environment and our climate. We must ELIMINATE NUCLEAR WEAPONS before they eliminate us! Physicians for Social Responsibility (www.psr.org) reports this: A groundbreaking new climate study shows just how urgent it is to prevent nuclear war and eliminate nuclear weapons before they eliminate us. “Rapidly expanding nuclear arsenals in Pakistan and India portend regional and global catastrophe,” published in Science Advances on October 2 by leading researchers Owen Brian Toon and […]
Despite the saber-rattling by the governments of the U.S. and South Korea and North Korea, the KOREAN PEOPLE — Both South and North — WANT PEACE! The Korean War (1950-1953) actually NEVER ENDED. The 1953 cease-fire is all we have. Mutual antagonisms and intermittent hawkishness from the U.S. government keep preventing real peace. When George W. Bush ginned up some propaganda for wars against Iraq and Iran he also said North Korea is part of an “Axis of Evil,” which is complete nonsense. Trump threatened to utterly destroy North Korea with nuclear weapons. For many decades the militaries of the […]
I am always encouraging people to envision and organize bold goals for a significantly better future. Recently I posted to my blog this article inviting us to do that: http://parallaxperspectives.org/lets-boldly-create-the-future-we-really-want-2 Now I invite you to take the next step. Please read (or re-read) that blog post and send me your e-mail suggestions for this topic: What bold, good reality would you want for four years from now — October 2023? Instead of feeling constrained by the current conditions that are bogging our nation down and curtailing our imaginations, I invite you to BOLDLY AND CREATIVELY IMAGINE the future you really […]
This is a HUGE surprise of GOOD NEWS from the Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance (OREPA)! For many years I have been reading OREPA’s newsletters and financially supporting their non-profit org in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. They have been opposing a major expansion of the nearby nuclear weapons manufacturing plant. The federal government’s plans for the plant were horribly reckless in many, many ways (including serious seismic dangers, which would be bad for a nuclear weapons manufacturing plant) – and horribly expensive. In September 2019 OREPA won their lawsuit against the nuclear weapons plant! See more information at www.orepa.org […]
For EVERY issue you care about (peace, climate, economics, democracy, social justice, human rights, etc.), the REAL SOLUTIONS will come when people organize nonviolently and strategically at the grassroots. ALL OF US — new people, experienced organizers, and everybody in between — can STRENGTHEN OUR SKILLS and add resources to our “toolboxes” so we can make more progress in working on our issues. I am offering my excellent series of SIX PRACTICAL WORKSHOPS on Nonviolent Grassroots Organizing to occur from mid-October to late November 2019 in the Olympia WA area — and perhaps also in other locations. Six consecutive Saturday […]
A great many issues are important, but neither of the two big political parties is doing nearly enough to solve these problems. While voting has some value, the most progress in solving problems will occur when ordinary people organize nonviolently, strategically, and vigorously from the grassroots. The article I am attaching below fleshes this out briefly. For more information, see resources I’ve posted to this blog’s “Organizing” category. During 2019 The Olympian is publishing five op-eds that I am writing. The one at this link was published in the newspaper on Fri. Sept. 27, 2019: BOC — 2019.09.19 — FINAL […]
Even before the 2016 election many people were recognizing that Trump had serious psychological problems. Since then a growing number of psychologists and psychiatrists have been alerting us that Trump’s psychiatric problems have been getting more serious and now are a very serious threat to the U.S. and to the entire world. His utter incompetence has caused him to fail in many, many ways. When people fail to follow his reckless and ridiculous orders — and when people push back against his dictatorial behaviors — he feels personally “cornered” and his psychiatric problems worsen, so he escalates his dangerous behaviors. […]
We need many more people to learn about the New START treaty and push to renew it before it expires 17 months from now. If Trump lets it expire, there will be no treaties to restrain an all-out nuclear arms race. After Trump destroyed the INF treaty recently, BOTH the U.S. and Russia started building recklessly dangerous and provocative new nuclear weapons that the INF had been prohibiting since 1987. Please consider signing up for the TUES OCT 1, 2019, phone briefing. See the invitation at this link before TUES OCT 1, 2019: https://www.armscontrol.org/events . […]
We care about a great many issues. This article’s advice can help us become MORE EFFECTIVE in working for any of the issues we care about: https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/08/27/from-protest-to-power/
This article provides useful information: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/8/16/1879574/-Why-North-Korea-Wants-Nuclear-Weapons?detail=emaildkcc Also, I wrote this to explain clearly why North Korea wants their nuclear weapons: When North Korea conducts a missile test, or when North Korea’s nuclear weapons get into the news, it is typical for the American people — and our media and our politicians — to assume that North Korea is up to no good, that North Korea is an aggressive threat, etc. Actually, we would do much better thinking — and much better public policy-making — if we were to understand WHY North Korea wants nuclear weapons. The American people — […]
In early September 2019 Trump fired his National Security Adviser John Bolton. Bolton was a NOTORIOUS hawk who kept opposing diplomacy and kept promoting war instead. He has been WRONG on foreign policy issues for decades. Finally Trump had found that Bolton was too hawkish even for Trump, so Trump fired him. Here are some articles about this, including articles summarizing Bolton’s horrible record and the political context for this latest firing: #1: John Bolton is an extremist who likes war and opposes diplomacy and international agreements. A great non-profit organization — www.beyondthebomb.org — wrote this: “Bolton managed to break […]
I wrote this powerful, inspiring essay because we have much more potential for solving problems and creating a better future than most people realize. Regardless of which issues you care about, I encourage you to read the essay at this link: Let’s Boldly Create the Future We Really Want
The 1964 movie “Dr. Strangelove” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Strangelove) was a dark political satire about nuclear weapons. The USSR devised a system that would automatically retaliate if the U.S. were to strike first, but a crazy U.S. general launches a first nuclear strike through a B-52 bomber, and there was no way for the leaders of the U.S. and USSR to prevent an all-out nuclear war. Since then, both nations have moved ahead with dangerous technologies that would mimic this wacky movie. Daniel Ellsberg’s 2017 book The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner said “Dr. Strangelove was not fiction; it was […]
