The Establishment (fossil fuel companies, big business, the “consumer culture,” economic elites, and BOTH of the big political parties) caused the climate crisis. Mainstream (corporate-owned) media — as always — played along as the mouthpiece for the corrupt Establishment. In order to solve the climate crisis, ORDINARY PEOPLE MUST PUSH BACK against big business, against government, and against mainstream media. Weather reports — and news reports about extreme weather — keep assuming that extreme weather is merely an “act of God” and ALMOST NEVER mention that decades of fossil fuel pollution and climate disruption have caused it. Even Seattle’s […]
Near the beginning of this article it says this: The radical right has developed a global narrative that, by uniting virulent racists and commonplace conservatives, mass shooters and populist politicians, is already injecting fringe ideas into mainstream culture. A paragraph soon after says this: The radical right’s story is rooted in the most basic plot of all: us versus them. Its main nemesis is determined, so the tale goes, to storm the battlements of the “civilized world” and, in what’s called a “great replacement,” oust its innocent inhabitants. Soon after, it says this: The idea of “the great replacement” is […]
The National Whistleblower Center (www.whistleblowers.org) reported in May 2019 — and updated its report in September 2019 — that Facebook “was not only hosting terror and hate content, but in fact auto-generating its own.” A whistleblower provided information that you can see here: https://apnews.com/f97c24dab4f34bd0b48b36f2988952a4?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=39a0cee3-f401-4489-b49a-d930eb9bc78e The National Whistleblower Center wrote, “The whistleblower filed a complaint with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in January 2019 alleging Facebook has repeatedly deceived shareholders and the public about its efforts to address terror and hate speech on its social media platform. By doing so, the whistleblower claims Facebook is violating securities laws that prohibit […]
The term “national security” is almost always ASSUMED to imply the need for more militarism, more fear of people in other countries, more willingness to fight wars, more military weapons, more military spending, and more nuclear weapons. That is a VERY NARROW channeling of our vision and our thinking. Really, our nation is NOT SECURE in many other ways. Our nation is NOT SECURE when: Many people are poor Many people are homeless Many people lack decent health care Many people feel alienated from society Many people are very angry Many people own guns that endanger themselves, their families and […]
I am always encouraging people to envision and organize bold goals for a significantly better future. Recently I posted to my blog this article inviting us to do that: http://parallaxperspectives.org/lets-boldly-create-the-future-we-really-want-2 Now I invite you to take the next step. Please read (or re-read) that blog post and send me your e-mail suggestions for this topic: What bold, good reality would you want for four years from now — October 2023? Instead of feeling constrained by the current conditions that are bogging our nation down and curtailing our imaginations, I invite you to BOLDLY AND CREATIVELY IMAGINE the future you really […]
For EVERY issue you care about (peace, climate, economics, democracy, social justice, human rights, etc.), the REAL SOLUTIONS will come when people organize nonviolently and strategically at the grassroots. ALL OF US — new people, experienced organizers, and everybody in between — can STRENGTHEN OUR SKILLS and add resources to our “toolboxes” so we can make more progress in working on our issues. I am offering my excellent series of SIX PRACTICAL WORKSHOPS on Nonviolent Grassroots Organizing to occur from mid-October to late November 2019 in the Olympia WA area — and perhaps also in other locations. Six consecutive Saturday […]
A great many issues are important, but neither of the two big political parties is doing nearly enough to solve these problems. While voting has some value, the most progress in solving problems will occur when ordinary people organize nonviolently, strategically, and vigorously from the grassroots. The article I am attaching below fleshes this out briefly. For more information, see resources I’ve posted to this blog’s “Organizing” category. During 2019 The Olympian is publishing five op-eds that I am writing. The one at this link was published in the newspaper on Fri. Sept. 27, 2019: BOC — 2019.09.19 — FINAL […]
Trump is relentlessly, repeatedly attacking TRUTH and attacking DEMOCRACY and other humane values in so many may ways that people are increasingly afraid that our constitutional government will be replaced by Trump’s dictatorship. Congress is not doing nearly enough to protect us. Trump has been stacking the courts with young, right-wing extremists who will continue imposing Trumpism upon us for decades into the future. Media ownership is concentrating in fewer hands, and those are increasingly right-wing, so now fewer Americans know what is really happening. A recent article was titled: “How Democracy Dies: Big Brother is Erasing the Public […]
Our society is suffering in many, many ways. The problems are all around us — and they are interconnected. They are rooted in a worldview that has been dominating the U.S. (and some other nations) increasingly in recent decades. I wrote a long article about this. Here is a very short article that summarizes a few of the main points. I published it in a recent issue of Works in Progress (www.olywip.org): This currently dominant worldview is hurting us.
An experienced and prominent civil rights lawyer lists 20 ways Trump is copying Hitler’s early rhetoric and policies. This is not a trivial rant, but rather a VERY SOLID AND SUBSTANTIVE comparison that is TRULY ALARMING! The title of the article I linked below is “Civil rights lawyer: 20 ways Trump is copying Hitler’s early rhetoric and policies.” The subtitle is “Civil liberties lawyer Burt Neuborne questions whether federal government can contain Trump and GOP power grabs.” The author’s book says our nation’s checks and balances might not be enough to protect us from Trump’s Hitlerian rhetoric and policies based […]
The July 2018 episode of my new TV series, “Glen’s Parallax Perspectives” clearly explains the scientific method so anyone can understand it. My guests and I urge governments at all levels to use honest science as an important foundation for viable public policy. People can watch the interview – and/or read the thorough summary I wrote – at this link: http://parallaxperspectives.org/tv-base-public-policy-on-honest-science Also, some other postings on my blog deal with science in various ways. One recent program explained why local governments do such a bad job of protecting the environment. My guests provided a number of smart insights. To watch […]
Just now I responded to an e-mail survey sent out by a prominent nationwide non-profit org that works to reduce gun violence throughout the U.S. They asked what their top priority should be. I said they should work to stop all of the U.S.’s war’ and de-militarize our foreign policy. I told them that the U.S.’s addiction to war and military violence create a culture that assumes shooting people is a good way to solve problems. The U.S.’s persistent militarism sets the tone for gun violence within the U.S. This really is “the elephant in the room” that the anti-gun […]
Oppressors like to use “divide-and-conquer” strategies to disempower the 99%. The Olympian published an op-ed I wrote in May 2019. Here is the article as a Word document: BOC — 2019.05.16 FINAL version — We’re All in This Together Here is the article as it appeared on the editorial page on May 23, 2019: https://www.theolympian.com/opinion/letters-to-the-editor/article230676584.html?
I wrote an insightful article in 2017, and it is still valid, so I updated it only a little and posted it here. I’ll write another proposing remedies for how to get out of this crisis. Look for that within the next few weeks. How We Got into Our Current Crisis
