For a long time the excellent, highly competent statewide organization Health Care for All — Washington (www.healthcareforallwa.org) has been working for Universal Single-Payer health care.  Their quarterly newsletter is an excellent source of information, so I urge everyone to sign up to receive it in the mail.  I also urge people to donate so they can continue publishing, organizing, and lobbying at the State Legislature. How could we move our whole society higher on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs?

In 1943 psychologist Abraham Maslow wrote that people have five categories of needs.  Our most basic needs are for our physiological (air, food, etc.), and the next higher category is for our safety (personal security, employment, etc.).  The next step up in the hierarchy is our need for love and belonging (friendship, connections, intimacy, etc.).  Above that is our need for esteem (respect, positive self-image, freedom, etc.), and the highest level of need in Maslow’s hierarchy is the need for self-actualization (becoming the very best person you can be). Tell Congress to ABOLISH the agency that runs the military draft

The U.S. law creating the military draft was passed in 1940.  It has oppressed generations of young Americans.  Now we have the opportunity to REPEAL THE LAW and abolish the Selective Service System, the federal agency that runs the military draft. On Christmas Day 1914, British & German soldiers practiced PEACE during World War I

Some people know this story, but many people do not. It is indeed possible for soldiers fighting a brutal war to STOP — AND PRACTICE PEACE — even for one day.  On Christmas Day, 1914, British and German soldiers fighting brutal trench warfare during World War I stopped, laid down their weapons, got out of their trenches, and joined together face-to-face to enjoy human solidarity.
