Contrary to the “conventional wisdom” that nuclear weapons protect us, they actually ENDANGER us. Nuclear weapons THREATEN our national security and the security of everyone else on Planet Earth. Just now I posted to my blog the GOOD NEWS that the House has refused to spend money for a reckless new nuclear weapon. Now THIS blog post reports on a second one that the House has refused to fund. This information came in late June 2019 from a different source, the Arms Control Association (www.armscontrol.org), a long-standing and well-respected organization working to limit nuclear weapons: House Votes to Defund Two […]
Many people assume that Republicans are bad and Democrats are good, so all we have to do is replace Republicans with Democrats and our problems will be solved. WRONG! In many, many ways, Democrats are part of the problem. Very often they actively go along with Republicans or timidly fail to oppose them. Robert Reich’s July 1, 2019, article said the Democrats caved in to Republicans about the border, despite huge public concern: https://www.nationofchange.org/2019/07/01/dems-cave-on-the-border/ This June 28, 2019, article reports that the highest-ranking Democrats in the Senate (Schumer) and the House (Pelosi) HELPED REPUBLICANS GIVE TRUMP $4.6 BILLION […]
For many years a Fourth of July celebration in Washington DC has been NON-PARTISAN celebration of our nation. But in 2019 Trump hijacked it and made it about him and his partisan supporters: https://www.thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/2019/06/trump-to-turn-dcs-annual-nonpartisan-july-4-celebration-into-event-centered-on-him-and-his-supporters-report/?utm_source=&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=298&recip_id=22838&list_id=2 In early July the Washington Post and other reliable sources reported that Trump has forced the National Parks Service (which is already underfunded and unable to keep up with necessary maintenance) to divert $2.5 million that had been intended for improving parks, so the NPS can pay for costs related to Trump’s Fourth of July event on the National Mall. The entire extravaganza will be very […]
The July 2019 interview on “Glen’s Parallax Perspectives” takes a fresh look at problems and solutions related to homelessness. We dispel some of the myths that interfere with realistic understanding and smart solutions. Instead of talking about it from afar, one of guests (Jamie Joy) actually is homeless. His first-hand experiences and insights help us understand the problems and solutions. Our other guest (Tye Gundel) co-founded a great local grassroots organization — “Just Housing” — in 2016 and has been working effectively with a variety of people and local governments to inform the public, advocate for compassionate and practical solutions, […]
In order to bully other nations with whom the U.S. government does not get along, our government imposes cruel economic sanctions — and sometimes viciously disrupts the economies — against other nations. Most Americans go along with this. They just don’t want American troops “on the ground,” so economic abuses are a way to attack other nations. But this kind of bullying is wrong too. I wrote this one-page article to explain. Please urge the U.S. government to stop this abuse. Economic sanctions are bullying without bombing or sending troops
The U.S. is obsessed with “national security” and wastes about half of our discretionary budget on militarism, nuclear weapons, covert actions, and violence around the world. This obsession and waste cause much neglect and suffering within the U.S. as well as abuse and endless wars and suffering around the world. We must replace the wasteful, ineffective, and downright counterproductive “national security” scheme with a fresh approach: “TRUE Security.” See this: TRUE Security TABLE.doc
Oppressors like to use “divide-and-conquer” strategies to disempower the 99%. The Olympian published an op-ed I wrote in May 2019. Here is the article as a Word document: BOC — 2019.05.16 FINAL version — We’re All in This Together Here is the article as it appeared on the editorial page on May 23, 2019: https://www.theolympian.com/opinion/letters-to-the-editor/article230676584.html?
I wrote an insightful article in 2017, and it is still valid, so I updated it only a little and posted it here. I’ll write another proposing remedies for how to get out of this crisis. Look for that within the next few weeks. How We Got into Our Current Crisis
This article expresses alarm but shies away from impeachment. I say IMPEACH NOW!!! https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/the-constitutional-system-is-not-built-to-resist-trumps-defiance-of-congress
The WA State Senate’s bill to abolish the death penalty passed the State Senate. The article at the link below says 54 House members wanted to pass it, but the House leadership (Democrat Frank Chopp) did not bring it up for a vote. Chopp has been opposing efforts to repeal the death penalty in WA State. House leaders said they wanted to focus on higher priorities than this bill. https://www.thenewstribune.com/latest-news/article229414449.html?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=fff8ef07-20b2-4c78-8559-6bca7143c5ca
Sometimes each of the big political parties does things intended to serve their own partisan interests instead of the nation as a whole. But in recent decades the Republican Party has become so extremely hyper-partisan that they have been violating the Constitution and constitutional principles in many ways (e.g., suppressing the voting rights of constituencies who favor Democrats and refusing to hold Senate hearings on Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland). This article exposes Mitch McConnell’s cynical partisanship and rule-breaking. He thinks winning for partisanship is all that counts. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/apr/06/mitch-mcconnell-senate-republicans-donald-trump-judges
The non-profit organization World Beyond War (www.worldbeyondwar.org) takes a bold stance: War is not necessary and is never good. We need to debunk the myths that keep war and militarism going. We can indeed choose peace. Debunking Myths of War See their powerful new PowerPoint presentation at this link: Debunking-the-Myths-of-War1 On April 29, WBW’s Organizing Director Greta Zarro presented a talk on “debunking the myths of war” for the Beyond War & Militarism Committee in Syracuse, NY. In making the case for war abolition, the talk dispelled the myths that war is inevitable, necessary, beneficial, or just.
Way back in March 2002 (during the George W. Bush administration) a New York Times article said the U.S. is a “rogue” nation regarding nuclear weapons. See the editorial at this link: US as Nuclear Rogue 3-02 NYTimes editorial
Watch this short video supporting science in the face of deliberate anti-science stupidity. (It includes some foul language.) Please sign it to urge Congress to pass the Scientific Integrity Act: https://act.credoaction.com/sign/scientific-integrity-act?t=4&akid=32516%2E8825164%2EeUnek6 Credo Action (www.credoaction.com) provided information about this. I’ve quoted some parts of their message and summarized other parts: “As climate change grows increasingly dangerous, the last thing the government should be doing is censoring its own scientists. But the Trump administration is firing and reassigning scientists, preventing the release of key reports, altering findings, and stacking […]
