Since the late 1960s Glen Anderson has devoted his life to working as a volunteer for peace, nonviolence, social justice, and progressive political issues. He has worked through many existing organizations and started several. Over the years he has worked especially for such wide-ranging goals as making peace with Vietnam, eliminating nuclear weapons, converting from a military economy to a peacetime economy, abolishing the death penalty, promoting nonviolence at all levels throughout society, and helping people organize and strategize for grassroots movements to solve many kinds of problems. He writes, speaks, and conducts training workshops on a wide variety of topics. Since 1987 he has produced and hosted a one-hour cable TV interview program on many kinds of issues. This problem is BI-PARTISAN.  It was bad under Obama, and Trump is continuing the problem.   I have been reading the powerfully informative publications of this excellent non-profit organization, the Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance (OREPA, www.orepa.org) for many years, and I have enjoyed donating significant amounts of money to help their work to protect the world (and their local region around Oak Ridge, Tennessee) from nuclear weapons. Typically, governments fall far short of acknowledging the serious problems — and they also fall short of proposing bold remedies to solve those problems. HERE IS AN EXCEPTION!  Recently three of Washington State government’s agencies collaborated with many poor people, racial minorities, and supportive organizations to create a Poverty Reduction work group.  They produced a 65-page report with a 10-year plan.  It is surprisingly smart and progressive! Demand Congress mark 75th anniversaries of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by pledging GLOBAL NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT!

On August 6 and 9, 1945, the U.S. stunned the world by dropping atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, and killed many more than 100,000 people. Since then the U.S. and eight other nations have built many, many more nuclear weapons (mostly the U.S. and Russia) that are vastly more deadly than those two “small” ones. The October 1962 Cuban missile crisis VERY NEARLY escalated into nuclear war between the U.S. and the USSR. A Soviet submariner courageously defied his order to launch a nuclear-tipped torpedo at a U.S. warship.  That would have quickly escalated into global destruction. Nearly all Americans are “deniers” of the nuclear weapons crisis.

It is well established that nuclear weapons violate international law.  An international court affirmed that in 1996.  Actually, even preparing for nuclear war violates the Nuremberg principles that the U.S. and the other victors in World War II established. Earthquakes and rising sea levels vs. nuclear power plants

Issues are interconnected! The climate crisis is causing sea levels to rise. Nuclear power plants need cooling, so they are built near bodies of water (rivers, ocean coastlines, etc.).  In fact, 40% of the world’s nuclear reactors sit on coastlines, where sea-level rise, earthquakes and tsunamis endanger them and can cause catastrophes for huge portions of the world. Put these few facts together: Democratic candidates are more likely to win when large numbers of people vote. In a number of states ruled by Republicans, those states do several things to reduce voter turnout — and to make it hard for racial minorities, young people, and poor people to vote, because those people tend to vote for Democrats. What Erich Fromm wrote about Fascism in 1941 pertains to the U.S. under Trumpism now.

In 1941 Erich Fromm wrote this about the Fascism that had emerged in Europe: “When Fascism came into power, most people were unprepared, both theoretically and practically. They were unable to believe that man could exhibit such propensities to evil, such lust for power, such disregard for the rights of the weak, or such yearning for submission.” Fromm wrote this about the Fascism that had emerged in Europe by 1941.
