Act now! Support “New START” treaty to prevent nuclear war with Russia

Ordinary people need to speak up now!

Trump keeps destroying treaties that protect us from nuclear war.

Trump seems opposed to the “New START” treaty that will expire in 2021, but Putin wants to renew it, so ordinary people need to push Trump to renewing it so we can reduce the worsening danger of nuclear war with Russia.

Trump recently destroyed the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty that Reagan and Gorbachev had created in 1987 to stop certain kinds of very provocative nuclear weapons in Europe that would have recklessly increased the danger of nuclear war there.  Now Trump seems opposed to another treaty that is necessary for reducing nuclear war risks

Before extreme war-hawk John Bolton either resigned or was fired as Trump’s National Security Advisor, Bolton had opposed the 2010 New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (“New START”).  That treaty limits our two countries’ strategic nuclear arsenals to no more than 1,550 deployed warheads and 700 bombers and missiles.

The New START treaty had a 10-year lifetime and will expire in 2021 unless Trump and Putin agree to extend it by five years.  A number of U.S. senators from BOTH political parties and U.S. allies are urging extending New START.  President Putin has been urging talks for extending the treaty, but Trump seems reluctant.

In October 2019 federal legislation — the New START Policy Act of 2018 (S. 3169) — calls on Trump to extend New START as long as Russia remains in compliance.  SIGN THIS PETITITION TO YOUR U.S. SENATORS to urge them to co-sponsor S. 3169 and help protect New START.  The petition is organized by the Arms Control Association, one of the U.S.’s smartest non-profit organizations working to prevent nuclear war.  HERE IS THE PETITION:  https://www.armscontrol.org/take-action/protect-new-start?source=email
The Arms Control Association made another plea in late 2018 to renew the New START Treaty.  SEE THIS INFORMATION AND SIGN THE PETITION:   https://www.armscontrol.org/act/2018-11/focus/inf-termination-bad-could-get-worse    AND    https://armscontrol.org/take-action/protect-new-start

HOT NEWS from December 2019: Putin offered to extend the New START Treaty. We must URGE TRUMP to agree.

Another excellent non-profit organization working against nuclear weapons — Global Zero (www.globalzero.org) — reported that on December 5, 2019 Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to unconditionally extend New START, the last remaining restraint on U.S.-Russian nuclear arsenals. The 2010 treaty caps deployed offensive strategic nuclear weapons to no more than 1,550 each, and Russia’s full compliance with the pact has been certified by U.S. intelligence agencies and the Department of State. New START will expire in February 2021 unless Washington and Moscow decide to extend it, which can be done by a simple executive agreement.
