Here’s what to expect from President Biden regarding nuclear weapons

December 15, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

On November 9, 2020, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (www.thebulletin.org) posted the article I linked below. The article begins by saying that in just four years “Donald Trump singlehandedly destroyed decades worth of hard work done by previous US administrations in establishing trust, confidence, and diplomacy—on nuclear and non-nuclear issues—among both friends and foes.” The article lists a number of ways in which Trump seriously escalated the dangers of nuclear weapons.  The article urges Biden to reverse those serious mistakes and to take several positive steps toward sanity and safety.  The article is relatively brief and easy to understand.  Here […]

Now 51 nations have ratified the U.N. treaty prohibiting nuclear weapons.

December 15, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

This blog’s “Nuclear Weapons” category has included a number of posts about the truly exciting, historic Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons” (TPNW).  Read those for background.  Now here is what’s new: In October 2020 Honduras became the 50th nation to ratify the treaty.  The treaty specifies that it will go into effect 90 days after the 50th nation has ratified it.  That means the TPNW will go into effect on January 22, 2021. The national level of Physicians for Social Responsibility (www.psr.org) celebrated the 50th ratification:  https://www.psr.org/blog/psr-celebrates-50-ratifications-for-the-ban-treaty/?emci=8508afcb-b313-eb11-96f5-00155d03affc&emdi=bc8e3199-9b18-eb11-96f5-00155d03bda0&ceid=135885 Currently 51 nations have ratified the Treaty.  More nations are making progress […]

Powerfully informative resources prove Trump’s horrible corruption, incompetence, etc.

December 15, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

We keep seeing various articles documenting various ways in which Trump is cruel, corrupt, incompetent, etc.  Recently two reputable national magazines focused entire issues on compiling such articles.  They are powerful resources.  I recommend them highly.   The July-August 2020 issue of Mother Jones focused especially on Trump’s extreme mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The front cover says:  “PLAGUED:  Grift, Greed, Gaslighting:  A Special Report on Trump’s COVID Corruption.”  Read it here:  https://www.motherjones.com/mag/2020/07/toc/   The October-November 2020 issue of The Progressive contains many articles on a wide variety of Trump’s terrible public policies and other actions.  It documents his cruelty, corruption, and […]

“How to Deal With the U.S.’s Current Crises”

December 14, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

“How to Deal With the U.S.’s Current Crises” October 2020 Our nation is suffering from several extremely serious problems all at once.  The crises are deeply rooted and actually go beyond individual elected officials and political parties.  Problems include the COVID-19 pandemic, economic injustices, homelessness, excessive military spending, racial injustices, the criminal justice system, unfairness to immigration, right-wing extremism, the climate crisis, nuclear weapons, and Trumpism. Instead of merely lamenting “ain’t-it-awful,” three guests (Jean Gant Delastrada, Liz Moore, and Glen Gersmehl) provide smart insights into those problems and lift up some positive values that can help us solve them.  We […]

Youth-led climate case in the European Court of Human Rights makes important progress!

December 9, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

The short news article I linked below begins with this paragraph: What has been described as possibly “the most important case ever tried by the European Court of Human Rights” cleared a significant hurdle Monday when the international body ordered more than 30 European governments to respond to a historic youth-led lawsuit seeking to force political leaders to take ambitious action against the existential climate emergency.   Later paragraphs say: Citing the “importance and urgency of the issues raised,” the European Court of Human Rights granted the youth-led case priority status, a move the plaintiffs and their supporters celebrated as […]

Trump’s contempt for truth and his war against science are serious problems.

December 9, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

In mid-August 2018, Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani said on public TV, “truth isn’t truth.” Fact-checkers have identified more than 20,000 lies and serious misrepresentations that Trump has told during his presidential campaign and 4-year term. On several occasions Trump publicly denied having said things that he had said in public — on video — in front of witnesses and the general public. Trump has wiped scientific facts off from federal government websites in order to protect his lies about the climate and other matters from being contradicted by published scientific information. He has silenced — and fired — people who […]

Sometimes the U.S. acts like a “rogue state.” What if the world treated the U.S. like one?

December 9, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

The U.S. often imposes sanctions and other penalties against nations that the U.S. government does not like. Sometimes the U.S. itself acts like a “rogue state.” What if the world treated the U.S. like a “rogue state,” imposed sanctions against our nation, etc.? Biden plans to appoint a board member of a giant military weapons manufacturer to be Secretary of Defense!

December 8, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

The federal government’s corrupt “revolving door” is continuing under Joe Biden. Biden has a long history of supporting wars and big business.  He is reportedly planning to appoint a member of one of the U.S.’s biggest corporations manufacturing military weapons to be Secretary of Defense. We need to “drain the swamp,” not make it swampier, as Trump has been doing. We need to make peace, not grease the skids for the military-industrial complex to continue ripping us off to build big, expensive military weapons. See this article: https://truthout.org/articles/biden-picks-raytheon-board-member-lloyd-austin-as-pentagon-chief/?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=f5dddb03-ca45-47c0-89fe-1e8854aaece5

Stop the executions that Trump has scheduled to occur before he leaves office

December 8, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

On December 4, 2020, Public Citizen (www.citizen.org), the non-profit organization Ralph Nader founded half a century ago, issued this urgent action alert: Please read, and please take action. Before July of this year, the federal government had executed only three people in the past half century. But then William Barr — Donald Trump’s sycophantic Attorney General — unilaterally overturned a 17-year ban on the federal government’s use of the death penalty. And in the few months since, the Trump administration has executed eight people. Including — two weeks ago — the first execution carried out by a lame-duck administration in […]

Trump’s DOJ rushed a no-bid contract for lethal injection drugs for MORE executions

December 8, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

After many years with no federal executions, Trump and his Attorney General William Barr have been hell-bent to execute people.  They executed eight persons since bringing back the federal death penalty in July, and they feel such an extreme emergency to execute even more that they are entering into a “no-bid” contract with the deadly chemical’s manufacturer so they can proceed with executing five more persons before Biden takes office.   The Trump regime claims an “urgent and compelling need” for the death-causing chemical in order to prevent the federal Bureau of Prisons from suffering if it had to go […]

International Declaration of Human Rights passed the U.N. General Assembly December 10, 1948

December 7, 2020 GlenAnderson 0

I’m posting this to my blog a few days before International Human Rights Day, December 10.  This day celebrates when the U.N. General Assembly passed the International Declaration on Human Rights on December 10, 1948.  It’s good to re-read the International Declaration on Human Rights every few years. Information and the text are at this link: https://www.un.org/en/universal-declaration-human-rights/ A .pdf with a simple, readable font is at this link: https://www.ohchr.org/EN/UDHR/Documents/UDHR_Translations/eng.pdf Thanks to Eleanor Roosevelt who had worked skillfully to create and pass this landmark document. Bonus questions:  (1) How many of these internationally recognized human rights has the U.S. (and/or states […]
